A Few Pics From Around Town

Image
This is one of my favorite streets in Old Mazatlán. These homes were built about 120 years ago and they are fronted by palms and flowers. I went to the marina this afternoon to make a reservation to go out on this little boat. The owners daughter told me they often go out 25 miles!  Depending on where the currents are determines where the fish are feeding. It's okay, they have beer and life jackets. We were at the Plazuela Machado the other night. Always something happening here. Cover bands, vendors of all kinds, and restaurants. It's a nice vibe. No hassles.

Dental story

Btw, my dentist put me on a stronger antibiotic because my jaw is still a little infected.

I went for a walk.

Dina and I found this nice restaurant near the condo this morning. It's a great place for breakfast with strong coffee and good food. The scenery isn't the same as our "usual place, but it's closer and cheaper. Last night we walked around the Machado after dinner. Some guys were break dancing in front of the theater. I guess it's still a thing.  Here's a couple of pics from today. I walked over to the orphanage on a recon. No shit, the place looks like a penitentiary. High walls with razor wire coils on top. The gates are solid steel. You can't even look inside. I'm going back on Monday. Sorry I didn't take a picture. The "Garment District" Our restaurant last night in Old Town.

Off to Mazatlan!

Plazuela Machado Dina and I have been in Mexico for a week now. We decided to close up the house and lease a condo for six months, starting in November.  Since we are going to be here for awhile (and I wanted to bring my bikes), we decided to take Dina's wheelchair accessible ramp van. Driving down over the the course of seven days, we were able to see some of the deserts of California, Arizona, and Western Mexico. God, I just revisited this post and realized how boring it is. I definitely need to engage my readers. First of all, I will be talking in the first person. I will tell you about my desires, my fears and anxieties, and my hopes for this trip.  Today I was looking at places where we can get involved on a community level, I was looking at orphanages and "feeding centers". Like most places in the developing world, Mazatlán has a lot of abandoned or just underprivileged kids. I know, coming at this as a (relatively) rich American, it will seem like a condescending a

Slow Week in Mazatlán

Image
It's been a slow week in Mazatlán. I had dental surgery  on Saturday in preparation for an implant. My molar was infected and some of my lower jaw bone had disolved!  So, the surgery lasted for rwo hours. The dentist instructed me to stay home for a week. Not even walking around town was allowed, never mind cycling. I was reassured by the complete scope of the procedure. From a CT scan of my jaw to the skill of the dentist and her assistant.

Thursday

My last post not withstanding, I am still a tourist here and I want to have some tourist-type adventures. I want to see all the stuff that other tourists see, interact with the locals, buy trinkets, and generally be a nuisance. So, today, I followed some Cruisers down to their giant ship.  I got pretty close to boarding the behemoth, but chickened out at the last minute. Saturday, I go to a dentist here to get a molar pulled and start the process of getting an implant. Not too excited about it, but needs to be done soon.
