Off to Mazatlan!

Dina and I have been in Mexico for a week now. We decided to close up the house and lease a condo for six months, starting in November. 
Since we are going to be here for awhile (and I wanted to bring my bikes), we decided to take Dina's wheelchair accessible ramp van.
Driving down over the the course of seven days, we were able to see some of the deserts of California, Arizona, and Western Mexico.
God, I just revisited this post and realized how boring it is.
I definitely need to engage my readers.
First of all, I will be talking in the first person. I will tell you about my desires, my fears and anxieties, and my hopes for this trip. 
Today I was looking at places where we can get involved on a community level, I was looking at orphanages and "feeding centers". Like most places in the developing world, Mazatlán has a lot of abandoned or just underprivileged kids. I know, coming at this as a (relatively) rich American, it will seem like a condescending attempt to salve my conscience. But, even if Dina and I can donate food, cleaning supplies, bedding, etc. it can make a difference.

¡Carnaval en Mazatlán! Six days of celebration when the city swells by 600,000. It truly is massive. Lots of revelers from Mexico and all over the world. I'm hearing many foreign accents. I was detained last night because I was carrying a pocket knife into the cordoned area. No big deal. A $56 cash "fine" and confiscation of the weapon (I was handcuffed to the police truck while we negotiated my release). I ended up watching the huge fireworks show from the rooftop at the condo. Dina will be back tomorrow and, hopefully, keep me out of trouble. Big parade forming up for tonight. I rode my e-bike along the route until it was too jammed up with pedestrians. Peeled off to side streets to get back home.

Day 30

I can't believe it's been a month since we arrived! It's been a very busy time learning new names and places, and exploring Old Mazatlán and the seacoast. I've been reserving trips in preparation for Sadie and Macy's visit. They're coming on the 21st for almost 2 weeks. I have been learning a lot by eavesdropping on the tour guides. I'm thinking about being a volunteer guide for los turistas for a couple of hours a week. Isn't that what old people do!? I started yoga this morning. It's a fairly easy class and was very enjoyable and relaxing. I met a Mexican women who was living in our neighborhood in Portland a few years ago!   I finally climbed El Faro in the evening when the sun is behind the hill and it's much cooler. Dina and I went to the beach early yesterday to watch the diving pelicans. Also, many frigate birds gathering up fish guts the Pescadores were throwing out. it's Christmas here in Mazatlán.

¡Carnaval!

Hey, Zues! Two days after taking down the Christmas decorations, Carnaval is starting. So far, it's one holiday after another here.  I love this installation. A corpulent dude on a unicycle with a cigar and a beer. Towering 30 feet over the Malecón. I think it's papier maché.
